Earlier this week I decided to do a little packet sniffing because we’ve been having some bandwidth issues. I spliced into the network with an old hub, between our router and gateway. I fired up ethereal on my laptop and started capturing packets. As I suspected, there were quite a few people streaming audio and video. There was also someone going buck wicked on some porn action too. Kinda funny, I started capturing at around 2pm and at 3pm is the companies designated break time. At 3pm they took a break and then picked up with their porn action when break was over. I let my manager know what the deal is and we put out a memo to all the users restating that that shit ain’t cool. I didn’t single out anyone but they know who they are. Someone from management came to me and admitted that they had been to said sites in the past. I told them it wasn’t them that I logged. Good thing about it is now I have a 1up on management.
I plan on doing some more packet sniffing from time to time as this is the only warning they will get.
Moral of the story is plead the fizifth.

I actually caught someone at work looking at porn on Friday. I’ve told people in manager’s meetings that I can and will check internet usage because we pay for bandwidth. A few looked worried, and others asked if they should stop checking email since they sometimes get questionable material. I said email with certain things are OK, I don’t really care, but actively seeking out porn, especially some crazy lesbian, underage, freaky stuff, is way out of line. I just cut the guy’s internet off…I guess I’ll get a support call about how he can’t get onto the internet.
