I just bit the bullet and ordered a new laptop. I figured I would order something fairly cheap since I buy a new one every 1-2 years. This time I went with a Dell Vostro 1400. Core 2 Duo 2.1ghz, 3gb ram, nvidia graphics, 160gb hardrive, webcam, bluetooth, and some other bullshit. The total came out to $780 before taxes. I got it so cheap because of a $500 deal. My old laptop is a Toshiba Satellite a105, which is still pretty decent minus the audio jack and dead pixel. I figured I would go with a business machine this time around. I take my laptop everywhere so the alloy-mag chassis should be better than my toshiba plastic piece of shit. I really wanted a Thinkpad, but couldn’t get one near the same price and specs as the dell.
Apparently the IT people before me didn’t know what the fuck they were doing. Either that or they were just un-organized as hell. There are shares all over the damn network. Nobody knows where any of the software is. People have permissions to shit they don’t need. I guess I have a lot of work ahead of me. Oh well, I actually enjoy tweaking everything to my standard. Makes me look busy and shit. Once everything is on autopilot I can just chill out and fuck off. Plus you end up looking like god and shit because you pulled them out of a huge mess. None of the IT people before me stayed longer than a few months. I hope there isn’t a bad reason for that. I heard that my predecessors were just in over there head. I ended up running into a lot of consumer grade networking equipment today. I’m planning on replacing it with business class shit. I probably have about 6 months of work stacked on me at this point. At least, I’m getting paid what I think I’m worth. Not much use in complaining about why or who screwed it up. We just need to fix it.
